Òfọ̀ – The Power of the Word

From our language arises the power of creation. What I communicate carries àṣẹ: it moves the world and transforms relationships. The language is sacred. We must use it with attention, care, and discernment.

The spoken word has power and participates in creation itself. I can nourish it with àṣẹ or with destruction; the choice is mine.

Everything I say carries weight. Whatever I speak with the strength of intention gains even greater power. I can bless or curse. My words echo and travel their path, opening possibilities to transform and bring into being what has been spoken.

Òfọ̀ is power, but it is also responsibility for what is said. If there is nothing that needs to be spoken, silence is also wisdom and protection.

But Òfọ̀ does not dwell only in the mouth or the hands. It also lives in the mind that thinks and the spirit that feels. It resides in the spoken word, in the thoughts we cultivate, and in the intention that precedes speech. The world, the body, and the spirit are all touched by the power of the word.
